puffed sleeves!

“Oh, I AM grateful,” protested Anne. “But I’d be ever so much gratefuller if–if you’d made just one of them with puffed sleeves. Puffed sleeves are so fashionable now. It would give me such a thrill, Marilla, just to wear a dress with puffed sleeves.”

“Well, you’ll have to do without your thrill. I hadn’t any material to waste on puffed sleeves. I think they are ridiculous-looking things anyhow. I prefer the plain, sensible ones.”

“But I’d rather look ridiculous when everybody else does than plain and sensible all by myself,” persisted Anne mournfully. (Chapter 11, Anne of Green Gables, Lucy Maud Montgomery)

i still can’t get over the fact that i made a dress with puffed sleeves!  they’re not super puffs, but puffed nonetheless.  i found a collection of the original historical american girl doll dress patterns online and knew immediately who to make a dress for!  and even better, her birthday was right around the corner.  i really wanted to sew a dress from felicity or samantha’s collection (samantha was my favorite character back when i was reading ag books), but their dresses looked rather complicated and intimidating…especially since i’ve never sewn a dress for anybody or anydoll.

i narrowed down my dress search to josefina’s portfolio because she had the least megabytes, which probably meant easier patterns, simpler instructions.  even though josefina’s christmas dress looked simple but its simple lines were elegant, and the very thrilling fact that it had puffed sleeves!

after i completed the dress i proudly showed mdh my masterpiece.  he said it looked nice.  i pointed out the puffed sleeves.  he said, “oh.”  humph!  what he should have said was, “the puffiest in the world!”  obviously not a kindred spirit in this regard.  but i was not too bothered because i did find other kindred spirits (of the female gender) that shared my same sentiment when i showed them the dress.  we only needed to be two sentences into the conversation and “puffed sleeves” would be mentioned.  most importantly, when i gave the dress to the birthday girl she was thrilled to pieces.  she complimented on all aspects of the dress.   from fabric choice to ribbon color (for someone who just turned 9, she really know how to give praises), and of course, she pointed out the puffs. 🙂

when her little brother saw me taking pictures of his sister’s doll he wanted me to take pictures of his lego creations (and so we threw in miss e’s boogie bear so she wouldn’t feel left out)!

p.s. i also made molly’s undergarments.
